Dancehall Artiste Gully Bop received a flashy farewell

Iconic veteran dancehall artist Gully Bop, born Robert Lee Malcolm, was laid to rest on Sunday, January 14, 2024. The funeral service took place at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, 36 Hope Road, Kingston, Jamaica, starting at 11:00 a.m. Gully Bop passed away on October 31, 2023, at the age of 59, after prolonged kidney-related health challenges.

Although Gully Bop was a popular figure in the dancehall scene, only a small crowd attended the funeral, with few well-known dancehall artistes present. Gully Bop’s estranged wife, Deborrah Nicholson-Malcolm, had previously stated that she would most likely not attend the funeral.

Bop was laid to rest in a lavish glass chariot with full view of his body shown to the public.

The controversial artiste made many enemies during his lifetime and up until his death. During his final days, Gully Bop daughter spoke out after the entertainer appeared with Auntie Donna asking for the public assistance with his ongoing health issues. The appeal caused an uproar from his former exes Shauna Controlla and A’mari “DJ Mona-Lisa” but the last furor came from Bop’s own daughter.

Gully Bop rose to fame in 2014 with the hit single “Body Specialist” after many years of trying to break into the music industry under the name Country Man. In the years following his rise to fame, Gully Bop faced challenges such as addiction and homelessness, as well as relationships with female artistes like Shauna Chyn and A’Mari DJ Mona Lisa.

His funeral service and burial can be viewed in the videos posted online, capturing the moments for fans and well-wishers worldwide.
