Jamaica coach Heimir Hallgrímsson blame for Jamaica’s defeat against Mexico
Heimir Hallgrímsson faced a barrage of criticism after the final whistle, with many pointing fingers at his tactical decisions throughout the match. The most contentious of these was a defensive substitution in the second half, puzzling fans and pundits alike.
Gerardo Arteaga scored from the edge of the penalty area in the 69th minute and Mexico beat Jamaica 1-0 on Saturday night in its Copa America opener.
2weeksdue~ “I’m not Jamaican, but I’ll fly there to help y’all stone the coach”.
kerrivk~ “Poor game management why we lose this game! How we a Mek defensive change and the defense did solid? Gi we gi weh we 3 points”.
Arteaga, who plays as a defender for the Mexican team, took an offensive stance despite being on the edge of the penalty area. Many argue that Mexico was in an attacking state from start to finish, using all players aiming to score regardless of their position. Mexico possessed the ball 70 percent of the time while Jamaica was in constant defense.
The coach faced immense criticism for failing to orchestrate an offensive strategy for the Jamaican team throughout the intense match.
“I don’t understand why coach Hallgrímsson made a defensive change when Jamaica needed more offensive momentum,” one commentator noted. Substituting a striker for a defender seemed to halt any forward progress Jamaica had begun to explore, particularly through their counterattacks.
_ajtoof_~ “I’m not Jamaican, I’m Italian.. BUT, The reggae boyz have nothing to be ashamed of. The future of the JFF is bright. Mash up dem, reggae boyz”.
“The idea was to empower some players who were called before but didn’t have the minutes to shine,” Mexico coach Jaime Lozano said through an interpreter. “Today was Arteaga’s turn, but we have a set of other players who are adding minutes at the top level. That’s what we had in mind when we made the roster.”
Michail Antonio appeared to put Jamaica ahead with a short-range header in the 50th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside following a video review.
“A fraction offside,” Jamaica coach Heimir Hallgrímsson said. “I’ve seen it again, and it was correct.”
“Hallgrímsson needs to do better,” echoed another analyst, stressing that the move invited Mexico to press higher up the pitch. By not capitalizing on the spaces left by Mexico’s aggressive play, Jamaica squandered opportunities that could have tilted the match in their favor.
Competing as a guest in South America’s championship for the 11th time, Mexico commanded the match with 20th shots, with 9 on target, and scoring on the 17th shot.
While Jamaica took 13 shots with 4 on target. Jamaica scored in the 50th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside following a video review.
Hakeen Dixon, who recently earned the prestigious title of Jamaica High School Footballer of the Year for under 17, entered the game at the electrifying 80th minute as a substitute for Bobby Reid. Enthusiasts fervently argue that Dixon’s unparalleled skills and tenacity would have significantly impacted the game if he had been part of the starting lineup.
stephendajureofficial stated, “That Dixon yout looks like a player that needs to play more”.
rash.eeka~” Cah put on man like Dixon in the last 10 minutes 😒 he should atleast start the second half”.
civouche “We were defending well and then the coach made 2 defensive subs when the problem was in attack and midfield. Coach dash weh di game”.
ezra.rasta~ “What I don’t understand why coach halgrimson made a defensive change ??? Halgrimson needs to do better”.
Mexico eventually scraped out a 1-0 victory over Jamaica, but their joy at making a winning start was tempered by what appeared to be a potentially tournament-ending injury to captain Edson Álvarez.
Álvarez, who plays for West Ham United in England and is one the most experienced players on the Mexican team, collapsed clutching his hamstring in the 30th minute and limped off the pitch in tears.
Jamaica, who are ranked 38 places below Mexico, thought they had scored their first-ever Copa América goal when Michail Antonio headed into the net five minutes into the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the video assistant.
Mexico stepped up a gear after that scare, with Luis Chavez, Santiago Gimenez and Gerardo Arteaga all drawing fine saves from Jamaica keeper Jahmali Waite, before Arteaga finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a thunderous strike.
