Jamaica Defence Force has appointed it’s first female Chief of Defence Staff
The Jamaica Defence Force has appointed it’s first female Chief of Defence Staff, Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman. The appointment will not only be the Jamaica Defence Force first Chief of Defence Staff; Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman will be the only woman in the world currently serving in such capacity.
On Thursday January 20th, the Jamaica Defence Force announced that the Chief of Defence Staff Designate, Commodore Antonette Wemyss Gorman was today promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (RAdm). The Ceremony of Promotion took place at the Caribbean Military Academy, Up Park Camp (UPC), Kingston, where outgoing Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Rocky Meade made the presentation of the new rank. RAdm Wemyss Gorman is set to formally assume command of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) tomorrow via a military parade to be held at the Force’s main base, UPC. This appointment will make RAdm Wemyss Gorman the first female Chief of Defence Staff of the JDF.
Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman will be the first woman to appointed in this role in the nearly 60 years of the Jamaica Defence Force. Wemyss Gorman started her education at Knox Preparatory School in Clarendon, Jamaica, before moving on to Knox College in Clarendon. She joined the JDF in August 1992 and completed her professional development training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom and at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Having served nearly 30 years in the JDF, she will be the only woman in command of a military force in the entire world. She will be the second woman in history to achieve this position after the Slovenian Major General Alenka Ermenc who was the head of Slovenian armed forces from November 2018 to March 2020.
