NBC announcer Leigh Diffey has admitted he ‘got it wrong’ after incorrectly naming Kishane Thompson as winner of the men’s 100m Olympic final over Noah Lyles.
Diffey, NBC’s regular play-by-play announcer for IndyCar who is calling his sixth Olympics and second track and field competition, was left red-faced after initially exclaiming that Jamaican sprinter Thompson had come out on top in Sunday’s prestigious 100m race.
Eventually it was confirmed that USA sensation Lyles had clinched gold by an astonishing 0.005 of a second, with Thompson forced to settle for silver after one of the most unbelievable photo finishes in Olympics history.
‘The men’s 100 was epic & closest of all time! My eyes & instinct told me Kishane Thompson won,’ he wrote on social media.
‘Obviously, that wasn’t the case. I shouldn’t have been so bold to call it, but I genuinely thought he won. I got it wrong.’

MSN also ran the story highlighting the public sentiment that Thompson was robbed.
The 27-year-old won the flagship athletics event in Paris tonight by just five thousandths of a second in what was one of the tightest 100m showdowns of all time, with the eight runner separated by just 0.12 seconds.
Lyles, who had to settle for second place in the semi-final race earlier on Sunday, swept up his first Olympic gold in 9.79 secs as he edged out Thompson.
It marks the greatest moment of the 27-year-old’s career, following on from a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
But viewers have taken to social media to express their confusion with how the winner was decided after the final went to a photo finish, leaving the sprinters with an agonising wait to see who had won.

Similarly, Noah Lyes himself admitted he thought Thompson had won.
The Olympic committee and Lyes supporters argues that when it comes to track and field the winner is the first person to get their chest across the line. While Thompson’s foot was across the line ahead of Lyles, it was the Team USA star who got his chest over first. Speaking after his win, meanwhile, Lyles expressed his joy at winning the first Olympic gold medal of his career. “It’s the one I wanted, it’s the hard battle, the amazing opponents, everybody was healthy and came to fight,” he said.
Nevertheless, many people disagrees and believe that Thompson arrived the the finish line before Lyes.
Many believes that the Jamaican sports authorities should have protested the silver medal given to Thompson
