Mr. Vegas questions Mark Golding on Dual Citizenship
Renowned dancehall entertainer, Mr Vegas, recently joined in on the discussion surrounding the citizenship status of Mark Golding, the president of the People’s National Party (PNP). Mr Vegas questioned Golding’s stance on decolonization in light of his potential dual citizenship.
In a post on social media, Mr Vegas posed a potent question to Golding. “Are you a citizen of Britain? If yes, then you are a subject of the King of England. How then are you saying you want full decolonization but are a subject of the King and that we can’t have one foot in and one foot out?” Vegas asked.
Opposition Leader, Mark Golding, recently expressed his personal perspective that dual citizens should have the right to sit as Members of Parliament (MPs). His viewpoint, he clarified, does not necessarily reflect the stance of the People’s National Party (PNP).
These queries come against the backdrop of Golding’s recent support of dual citizens serving in the Jamaican Parliament. Golding also expressed a preference for the Caribbean Court of Justice to be Jamaica’s final appellate court. He further mentioned that Jamaica should not have *”one foot in and one foot out of King Charles’ yard”*, which has led to increased calls for clarity surrounding his personal citizenship status.
In a previous interview conducted in 2022, Golding did acknowledge having a British passport due to his father being born in the United Kingdom. He explained that he chose not to renew his British passport after becoming an adult and instead acquired a Jamaican one. Golding further assured that since his involvement in representational politics, he has opted not to maintain his UK passport, deeming it inappropriate.
Despite these statements, his posture towards dual citizenship and Jamaica turning into a Republic led to political representatives urging him to divulge if he held British citizenship. Golding, should he aspire to be Jamaica’s Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, bears the moral obligation to clarify his citizenship status, as per critics and observers.
It also heightens concerns that as per British law, any British citizen serving in another country’s army or offering defense in conflict is considered a criminal act. This fact further compounds the need for transparency regarding Golding’s citizenship.
Mr. Vegas, pointed out that the PNP took other Member of Parliament on the matter of Dual Citizenship and argue that this statement is hypocritical. According to Vegas, decolonization is a trigger word for many Jamaicans due to our slave past. Nevertheless, he argued that the Opposition Leader cannot call for full decolonization if he has a British passport as this makes Golding a subject of the King.
Vegas Challenges Golding: Step Aside if Clinging to British Passport!
Is Mark Golding truly committed to full decolonization, or is he just another politician with divided loyalties? The audacity to hold onto a British passport while leading a nation striving to break free from colonial shackles is not only contradictory, it’s downright scandalous! If Golding has a British passport, it’s high time for him to step aside – how can one possibly champion decolonization while clinging to colonial remnants? Vegas isn’t just suggesting; he’s demanding accountability and authentic leadership!
Critics argue that dual citizenship can create conflicts of interest. A citizen may be divided in their loyalties between their two countries, creating potential problems, particularly in times of international tension. In addition, dual citizenship may allow individuals to exploit legal loopholes, further complicating matters for countries embroiled in such issues.
