Mark Golding caused this upon himself
Opposition leader Mark Golding claim he will renounce his British citizenship.
Mr. Golding declared with conviction that Jamaica needs complete decolonization, emphatically stating that one cannot have “one foot in and one foot out of the King’s Yaad,” fully aware of his status as a British citizen. He made these statements without intending at the time to renounce his British citizenship.
This stance was perceived as hypocritical and disrespectful to the Jamaican populace.
Regardless of whether holding British citizenship should impact one’s eligibility to be the Prime Minister of Jamaica, making such declarations while being aware of one’s own British citizenship is undoubtedly perplexing and outright bizarre.
Conversely, as Jamaica transitions to a Republic, the unique positions of the President of the Jamaican Republic and other leadership roles within the Jamaican government necessitate undivided allegiance to the nation. Thus, it is prudent for anyone occupying these positions to forsake allegiance to any other country.
Reportedly, Mr. Golding only obtained his Jamaican passport at the age of 46. Questions arise about the passport he used throughout his adult life and whether he activated his Jamaican citizenship upon acquiring his Jamaican passport. Serious concerns have emerged, including whether he should provide a birth certificate to confirm his Jamaican birth. Similarly, inquiries are being made about allegations that he does not own a home in Jamaica. If true, where then does Mr. Golding own a home?
Finally, how will Mr. Golding demonstrate that he has indeed renounced his British citizenship or should the Jamaican people take is word for it?
