Prime Minister Andrew Holness unveiled the newly renovated bathroom at the Ocho Rios Market
Prime Minister Andrew Holness unveiled the newly renovated bathroom at the Ocho Rios Market in a ceremony highlighting the government’s commitment to improving public facilities. The modernized bathroom is designed to cater to the needs of both vendors and the general public, ensuring a more hygienic and comfortable environment. This renovation is part of a broader initiative aimed at upgrading infrastructure in key market areas, which are essential hubs for commerce and community interaction. The project received positive feedback from market vendors and visitors, who appreciate the enhanced amenities and the boost to overall market conditions.
In February of this year, the Minister of Local Government and Community Development, the Honorable Desmond McKenzie, conducted a tour of the facility. He acknowledged the challenges experienced by vendors and reiterated the Ministry and the St. Ann Municipal Corporation’s commitment to addressing these issues.
“I personally visited the location and empathize with the pressures faced by the vendors. I have instructed the Chief Technical Officer in the Ministry to collaborate with the Superintendent of the St. Ann Municipal Corporation to prepare and provide an estimate for the necessary repairs. This will enable us to secure the funds required to commence the repairs, particularly those pertaining to the public sanitary facilities,” he stated.
Minister McKenzie emphasized that the Government is dedicated to improving market facilities throughout Jamaica.
He highlighted the importance of markets as crucial economic centers, especially in resort areas such as Ocho Rios.
“The Government is undertaking a comprehensive market improvement program. Recently, the Prime Minister and I visited Hanover to inspect the markets in Lucea and Hopewell,” Mr. McKenzie explained.
The new facilities include improved sanitation systems, better lighting, and increased accessibility features to accommodate individuals with disabilities. These upgrades reflect the administration’s focus on public health and safety, underpinning the importance of providing clean and well-maintained amenities in public spaces. Additionally, the renovation is expected to set a standard for future projects, supporting socioeconomic development through better infrastructure.
The opening event was attended by local officials, market representatives, and community members who expressed their gratitude and optimism for continued enhancements. The Prime Minister emphasized that such projects are crucial for uplifting community standards and fostering economic growth. With this development, the Ocho Rios Market is anticipated to see increased activity, benefiting local vendors and serving as a model for other markets in the region.
