Prince Harry to Receive Pat Tillman Award for His Work With the Invictus Games

Prince Harry will be honored at the ESPYS in early July, receiving the Pat Tillman Award for Service.

According to ESPN, which hosts the annual awards show, the Duke of Sussex is being given the Pat Tillman Award “in honor of his tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport.” The award, ESPN notes, is “given to a person with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes the legacy of the former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman.” Past recipients of the Pat Tillman Award for Service include the Buffalo Bills training staff (last year), Gretchen Evans (in 2022), and Marcus Rashford (in 2021).

Prince Harry is being recognized for founding the Invictus Games, an international, Paralympics-style competition aimed at helping veterans, active military, and their families use the power of sport to overcome visible and invisible wounds. Harry recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

At a panel earlier this year, Harry shared that he was inspired to create the Invictus Games after witnessing the U.S. Department of Defense’s Warrior Games in 2012. He said, “Sport was the magic that I witnessed. Having just come back from Afghanistan myself, seeing the wounded, injured, and sick and seeing the effect.”

The 2024 ESPYS airs live on July 11 at 8 p.m. EDT, hosted by Serena Williams. Alongside Harry, Steve Gleason will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage and Dawn Staley is being honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. All other winners can be voted on by fans via ESPN.

Prince Harry hasn’t made a public appearance since his and Meghan Markle’s trip to Nigeria in May, and he will likely attend the ESPYS in Los Angeles. The 2024 ESPYS will air Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m. eastern on ABC.
