The People’s National Party (PNP) seeks clarity after the killing of an alleged Don

According to Nationwide News, two members of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) are seeking clarification from the police following the fatal shooting of an individual in the Goldsmith Villa area of August Town in St. Andrew.

The deceased, Marvin Markland, also known as Papa, was reportedly killed by law enforcement officers during a confrontation. He was reputed to be a prominent figure and an alleged don, in August Town.

According to the police, an illegal firearm was confiscated at the scene.

Patricia Duncan Sutherland, PNP caretaker for Eastern St. Andrew, addressed the media on Wednesday.

According to reports, In 2019, Marvin Markland was apprehended and charged with the murder of Omar Johnson, who was fatally shot on New Year’s Day. He was eventually acquitted of that charge.

Last year, Markland, also known as Kevin Powell, was identified as a person of interest by the police in relation to a surge of violent crime in the Corporate Area.

Meanwhile, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has announced the initiation of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of Marvin Markland in the Goldsmith Villa area of August Town.

INDECOM reported that its team was informed that an individual was shot and injured during a confrontation with members of the security forces, and the individual was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.

The commission stated that a firearm was reportedly recovered from the scene.

INDECOM indicated that residents have expressed concerns regarding the circumstances of the shooting, which will also be examined during the investigation.

The commission is appealing to any witnesses of the incident to contact its office at 876-968-1932.

INDECOM further noted that since the beginning of the year, 54 individuals have been shot and killed by the security forces, with ten of those incidents occurring in May.
